This update to the most popular lens in the Sony FE lineup is substantial. Namely, you get improvements in autofocus speed and sharpness along with a reduction in both size and weight. It's pretty rare to get that particular combination, so this lens should bring a smile to your face.

For those new to this focal length zoom, it is our most popular lens in every single lens mount we carry, and for a good reason: it's so incredibly versatile. Our clients use it for photography as well as video for weddings, corporate events, travel, landscapes, and the list goes on and on. It really does a great job of covering all you need in the standard focal length range.

If you're wondering what technical improvements Sony has made to this lens, here's a brief run-down. First, they updated the autofocus system to have 4 motors, making it faster, quieter, and more precise. Next, they optimized the optical design, adding aspherical elements, adopting the latest coatings, and adding two more blades to the aperature (up to 11 now).

For video shooters, Sony added a direct aperture control ring (with de-clicking available). Even more important, they have minimized focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming so that the only movement you're getting is the movement you want. The new AF system is also quiet enough to use during active shooting, and the manual focus operation has been designed to provide smooth, linear, intuitive operation.
