We love the FDR-AX series of cameras from Sony. They've always been a work horse video camera in our rental catalog, and for good reasons. They are easy to use, compact, and have awesome image quality. This latest version, the FDR-AX700 continues that trend with a few more features that we think you'll really appreciate.

Built around the tried and true 1" CMOS image sensor, this camera offers 100 Mbps 4K up to 30 fps, and 1080p up to 120 fps for silky smooth slow-motion shots. For a camera this size, the higher bit-rate is a nice feature that allows for much higher quality video than you get with the over-compressed output from lesser cameras. Speaking of image quality, this camera also features High Dynamic Range (HDR) to improve visible contrast and color in your recordings. New to this series and much appreciated is the addition of S-Log2 and S-Log3 color gamuts for improved color grading flexibility. Add these image features to a bright, crisp 12x zoom lens (29-348mm equivalent) and you have the recipe for very high quality video footage.

One of the largest improvements Sony made with this camera is in its Autofocus system. Since AF performance is so especially critical for 4K shooting, this camera carries a 273-point phase detect system that covers ~80% of the frame. The benefits to you are that the camera is both more accurate and faster to lock focus. This is especially helpful for tracking moving subjects, and the camera allows you to specify how sensitive you want the focus to be.

Sony also added a second memory card slot, allowing you to choose between relay or simultaneous recording. You can use the full-size HDMI port to send a clean signal to a monitor or external recorder. Finally, you have your choice of built-in 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64 ND filters if needed.
