The Videomic series of mics from Rode is our workhorse lineup for on-camera shotgun mics. This version is the top of that lineup, with a great sound and some compelling features.

Notably, the sound across the lineup is actually quite similar, which is to say: very good. This capsule design is a supercardioid pattern, which means a little more signal rejection from the sides at the expense of slightly more rear-mic pick up. Obviously the primary pick up location is from the front, and it's great at that.

Supporting the system is a rugged yet isolating Rycote lyre suspension, which is light-years ahead of the old system in terms of simplicity and durability, without sacrificing any performance. The foam windscreen has also been redesigned to be bigger than its predecessor, with a much more secure mounting system.

The real differences that make this microphone shine are in the operation, power, and controls. A new simplified button layout and LED read-outs show you what you need to know quickly. A detachable signal cord means you can install different lengths without issue, and also makes the unit more durable. The high-pass filter is improved with two possible cut points (75 Hz or 150 Hz). The Rode Videomic Pro+ also has a new battery system, with a factory rechargeable pack coming standard that provides up to 100 hours of operating time(!). If you happen to run out of charge with this pack, have no fear. It also takes two standard AA batteries. The battery LED gives you plenty of warning when you're running low, so you've got that going for you too.

So what's not to love? Well, the unit did grow a bit in size and weight relative to its predecessors. But we think the trade-off is worth it, considering all of the benefits. Rent one today and we think you'll agree.
