Details
Nikon has dropped another great workhorse body in the "700" series. Known as the D780, this camera refreshes the out-bound D750 with a number of new features and specifications. A brand new BSI sensor and Expeed 6 processor top the list of improvements, with reduced high-ISO noise performance for better low-light detail and color. Next on the list is a new autofocus system that adds more cross-style points. This means improved performance in hard-to-shoot low light or low contrast situations. The upshot is that autofocus will now work down to f/8 (instead of f/5.6 like the D750). It also has a new hybrid phase detection system for use with video. It's much more accurate, and even has Eye-Detection AF mode to keep your focus right where it belongs.
Next on the D780 list (and requiring a new paragraph) is the improved video performance. You now get 4K framerates up to 30 fps using the entire frame (or cropped, if you prefer). You can also shoot high-speed footage at up to 120 fps in full HD mode. The HDMI out gives you full 10 bit uncompressed files, or you can record internally to 2 UHS-II high speed SD card slots. In addition, you can shoot in N-LOG gamma for excellent dynamic range and color grading options in post. Finally, you also get focus peaking and zebra stripes to help with focus and exposure visualizations. All in all, this is a *significant* step up in the video arena for Nikon.
This camera is awesome for both still photography and video use. If it's anything like the D700 or D750 before it, it will be especially loved by wedding shooters (both still and motion). That being said, we think it's an incredibly versatile camera that's well suited to nearly any shooting situation you throw at it. Rent it today and see for yourself!
