Hello, Canon, what’s this? Are we looking at a manageable and affordable 800mm telephoto lens? Am I understanding correctly that I don’t need to be a professional wildlife photographer in order to justify a costly lens the size of a small child? Alright, you’ve got my attention.

If you’re anything like us, you looked at that f/11 aperture and you’re letting that dissuade you from giving this lens a shot (literally)... but let us share with you what we’ve learned. With such an extreme zoom, you’re going to get extreme compression. That means even at f/11, you’re still going to get that blurry bokeh background to isolate your subject and create some stellar images. The built in image stabilization (IS) with the lens and the camera IS means that you can still hand hold this lens and get sharp images. Weighing in at 3 lbs (versus the 800 f/5.6 at 9 lbs), the compact RF 800mm f/11 is ready to be taken on an adventure!

It is worth mentioning that we don’t recommend shooting on auto with an f/11 lens. Your camera is going to try to compensate for a correctly exposed image and boost up your ISO too high or adjust your shutter speed so that it’s too slow. For that reason, we recommend that you’re familiar with adjusting exposure. This lens also has a unique mounting system. You will need to unlock the lens at the base, extend the lens, and re-lock in order to mount it and have it communicate with the body. We know, it’s weird and confusing at first, but it’s worth it to have a more compact lens to travel with.
