Details
The classic Canon 35mm f/1.4 was originally released in 1998. 18 years is a long life for a modern lens, and it was certainly due for an update. The Canon 35mm f/1.4 USM and the Canon 35mm f/1.4 II USM share a focal length and ultra sonic motor- and that’s about where the similarities end. The new Canon 35mm f/1.4 II is a huge step above its predecessor, most obviously in terms of sharpness. Corner to corner sharpness is extremely impressive. The lens design feels more solid, which could be partially due to its increased weight. This lens also features Canon’s newly designed BR Optics (Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics), which significantly reduces chromatic aberration. Two aspherical elements with one UD element combined with fluorine coating on the front and rear elements to prevent smudges and subwavelength coatings to reduce ghosting make this lens a force for sharpness and reliability. The new 35mm f/1.4 is, to be sure, a welcome refresh to the classic focal length.
