A no-nonsense hand-holdable 300mm, the EF 300mm f/4L IS employs two image stabilization modes, one for normal shooting, and the other that automatically detects vertical or horizontal pan- both of which gain around 2 stops of stabilization. Ultra fast telephotos are great, but they come at the expense of additional size and weight. Thanks to its modest aperture, this 300mm side steps the weight gain while still employing a very usable f/4. Great for weddings and trips requiring compression and reach, don’t overlook this very usable telephoto.
